Kohala High School implements a unique Standards Based Grading (SBG) policy. Information and details on this grading policy can be found under State & School Standards.
KHS Registration Policies
Registration determines which courses will be offered for the next school year. Students will be held accountable for their choices. Please be sure to select courses that are relevant to your projected career goals. Whether you think you will be seeking employment upon graduation or whether you think you will pursue a college education, you need to select those classes which will help you to achieve your goals. Please remember, if the classes you select during registration are offered, you will be scheduled for those classes barring any conflicts in scheduling. Be sure to complete your registration form in a timely manner. Follow the procedure as outlined below:
- Complete registration form accurately (use your legal name).
- Consult with your parents, teachers, counselor.
- Obtain parent signature and approval.
- Return signed and completed form to registrar by the specified date.
KHS Class Change Policies
The master schedule will be determined by student choices. Student choices will determine the kinds of classes we will be offering next school year. All students will, therefore, be held responsible for their course selections and will be allowed to make changes only under the following special circumstances:
- Computer/clerical error
- Credit earned over summer
- Physician's waiver (i.e. PE)
- Approved modified day (i.e. IEP, 504, work study)
- Class cancellation
DOE Grade Level Changes
Promotion and retention of secondary students is based on the number of credits earned. All credits applied for promotion must be received by the beginning of the school year. Credits received after the school year starts will be applied toward the following school year. Students taking summer/correspondence credits need to get all transcripts to the registrar by July 31 for promotion to the next grade level. Please refer to the following scale, which is used throughout Hawaii's public schools for grade level placement:
Freshman 0.0 - 4.5 credits earned
Sophomore 5.0 - 10.5 earned
Junior 11.0 - 16.5 earned
Senior 17.0 or more earned
Freshman 0.0 - 4.5 credits earned
Sophomore 5.0 - 10.5 earned
Junior 11.0 - 16.5 earned
Senior 17.0 or more earned
KHS Class Closing & Cancellations
Classes may be closed or cancelled depending on enrollment. Once a class section is filled with a maximum number of students it will be closed. Classes may be canceled if enrollment does not reach a set limit. Students may be removed from an overfilled class in the following manner:
- Student may voluntarily move to another class.
- Student who did not select class during registration may be asked to make another selection.
- Students who were last enrolled in registration process may be moved to another class.
- Students in lower grades who will have ample opportunity to take class at a later date will be given option to move.
KHS School Messenger
SchoolMessenger will be sending messages as an opt-in for parents to receive text instead of phone messages...it is not a scam message.
The message you will receive is as follows: "Hawaii Department of Education messages. Reply Y to confirm; HELP 4 info. Msg&data rates may apply. Msg frequently varies. Schoolmessenger.com/tm"
Parents need to reply or they will not receive text messages that your school sends. If they ignore the invite, they may also opt in by texting "Y" to 67587.
