DOE Guidelines Updated Feb 2022
The Hawai‘i State Department of Education (HIDOE) and the Hawai‘i State Department of Health (DOH) recognize the benefits of children attending school in person, including the fundamental links between education and long-term health outcomes. In-person instruction is particularly important for younger children and those with special educational needs. Social and emotional support resources made available on school campuses are also critical to the health of our keiki, and for some families, food security is provided through school meal programs. All these factors must be considered in the overall health benefits of in-person learning. Reopening of schools requires a broad community commitment to reduce the risk of exposure to COVID-19. It is critical that all complex areas, school administrators and school staff are prepared to contribute to the prevention, rapid identification and mitigation of the spread of COVID-19. The goal of this guidance document is to help schools protect students, teachers, administrators and staff, and to help slow the spread of COVID-19. The DOH COVID-19 guidance for schools, which this guidance document is based on, is layered, flexible and aligned with the CDC's Guidance for COVID-19 Prevention in K-12 Schools. Each school is different, and not every strategy outlined in this guidance can be implemented in the same way at every school. All guidance, including this document, is subject to change as new information regarding COVID-19 becomes available.
